Face To Face With A Facial: The Process Is Smoother Than You Think

November 23, 2018

Never had a skincare treatment before, or not for a while? Are you dying to book an appointment and experience a facial but holding yourself back because you’re not sure what to expect during the process?

Believe it or not, my very first facial was in esthetician school! I know, right? If I only knew how good my skin would feel and how much I would learn I would have gotten one long before. But, just like you and many others, I had been wary because I didn’t know what a facial is all about.

Facials are fun, fulfilling—and good for your skin! So, let’s get started. Here’s what to expect in a traditional facial.

Why are facials an important part of my regimen?

We get haircuts and color treatments, work out, eat healthy, visit doctors for checkups, etc., so why not take better care of our skin? After all, it’s the body’s largest organ—and a protective shield for all the organs that keep us alive. I believe we often overlook our skin because we see it all the time. Think of facials like regular checkups for your skin, helping you prevent problems as the seasons change.

It’s true—your skin changes when the weather does. You may notice that, during the summer, your skin tends to get oilier. That’s because there is more moisture in the air and you perspire more. Not so in the winter. As the fall days grow crisper, they also grow drier. And, when our indoor heating systems kick in, even with humidifiers, our skin tends to dry out more. Skin that can’t “breathe” holds in impurities and gets chapped, like your lips. Facials to the rescue!

How often should I get a facial?

How frequently you should get a facial depends on your skin type and its condition.

For example, acne-prone, oily skin should get a facial every two to three weeks to keep the skin clean and so acne treatments work better. More normal skin types only need a facial every four to five weeks to remove dead skin cells and boost hydration.

What happens when I get a facial?

Facials involve pore cleaning and refreshing, skin hydration and relaxing treatments. If your skin’s pores fill easily, you may feel a little discomfort during what’s called “extraction.” That’s the professional removal of blackhead and whitehead sebum and usually doesn’t last long. The results are worth it. Your skin will appear flushed for the day, but after about 24 hours you usually get back to normal.

It’s important to visit a licensed esthetician who is trained to do extractions correctly to avoid blotches and scarring. She will analyze your skin with a magnifying lamp, give you her professional assessment, educate you about what to use on your skin while offering treatment options, and provide tips to improve your skincare game.

Most facials also include applications of oils and lotions and a facial massage, all in a restful, quiet, spa-like environment. Your skin will feel clean and refreshed and have a bit of a glow.

How do I maintain the results from a facial?

A good facial is an investment in the health of your skin. So, make sure you get your money’s worth by using the right products and following your esthetician’s tips to maintain the benefits of a facial at home.

You wouldn’t go to the dentist for a cleaning and then go home and never brush or floss again, right? In the same way, after a procedure that’s cleansing, therapeutic and relaxing, make sure to follow the esthetician’s advice and your skin will look so good it won’t know the season.

Now that you’re ready for a facial, be sure to book an appointment only with a licensed esthetician. She’ll get you ready to face the holidays—all aglow!
